As the name already describes, magnetic field meters are used in industry and research to measure a magnetic field. It does not matter whether the magnetic field measuring device measures a static (DC) magnetic field or an alternating (AC) magnetic field. Magnetic field meters for static magnetic fields are used to determine the field strength of the permanent magnets. The magnetic field testers can also measure the field strength of the AC fields under certain conditions. Magnetic field meters for alternating magnetic fields, i.e. electromagnetic fields, are defined by the frequency range that the magnetic field measuring device covers.
For measurements of electromagnetic fields from power lines, substations etc. the magnetic 
field meters covering a frequency range at 50/60 Hz are used. Often, though, the magnetic field meters are used, which can measure a wider frequency range. For example, magnetic field testers are used that are suitable for electromagnetic fields between 30… 300 Hz. In the AC magnetic field meters, internal measuring coils, similar to antennas, are often used to measure an electromagnetic field. Here the magnetic field meters are divided into two groups: uniaxial and triaxial measuring probes. Magnetic field meters with a 3D measuring sensor are much easier to use. In the magnetic field meter itself there is a possibility to switch between the X, Y and Z axes. In practice, this makes handling easier. When using magnetic field measuring devices with one measuring probe, it is necessary to pay attention that the measuring device is always correctly aligned with the magnetic field, otherwise the measuring device cannot reliably measure the electromagnetic radiation. In contrast, this type of magnetic field meter is comparatively cheaper. Both types of the measuring devices can be found in the products range of PCE Instruments.
Magnetic field testers for static magnetic fields are used to measure the field strength of magnets. Magnetic field measuring devices of this type use a Hall sensor to determine the magnetic strength. The Hall sensor is able to precisely determine the field strength. Thus, the magnetic field measuring device can not only measure the strength of the magnetic field but also detect the direction. The magnetic field meter for DC fields is also able to determine the north and south poles. Magnetic fields of this type are often also called Gauss meters.
