A ferrite content measuring device, also known as a ferrite meter, is a specialized testing device for determining the ferrite content in austenitic or duplex stainless steels. The ferrite content is a decisive factor for the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and welding behavior of stainless steels. Precise determination of the ferrite content is particularly important in welding technology and in the chemical industry in order to prevent material failure due to cracking or stress corrosion cracking.
Ferrite measuring devices generally use magnetic-inductive methods, as ferrite is ferromagnetic and can therefore be distinguished from the non-ferromagnetic austenitic matrix. Modern devices enable non-destructive, fast, and precise measurement directly on site, e.g., on weld seams or manufactured components. The measured value is often given in ferrite units (FE) or as a percentage. A typical measuring range is between 0 and 80 FE. The ferrite content is a decisive factor for the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and welding behavior of stainless steels for quality control and compliance with standards (e.g., DIN EN ISO 17655).
