The water hardness of drinking and process water influences many processes in industry, households and leisure. For some applications, the carbonate hardness must be measured in addition to the total hardness because limit values are defined for both parameters. While the total hardness describes the amount of all dissolved calcium and magnesium ions, the carbonate hardness describes the proportion of calcium and magnesium ions that are bound to hydrogen carbonates.
With an electronic water hardness meter, not only total hardness and carbonate hardness can often be determined quickly and easily but also other properties of the water. For the evaluation of the photometric measurements, the appropriate algorithm must be defined in the meter. It is usually possible to save the measured values internally in the water hardness tester. Depending on the meter, the values can then be transferred from the device memory to a smartphone or a PC via Bluetooth for further processing.
