Description

Coating Thickness Gauge for non-metal substrates / External ultrasonic sensor / Sound velocities stored / Internal memory

The Coating Thickness Gauge for non-metal substrates works according to the pulse-reflection principle of ultrasonic measurement and delivers precise results for a wide range of materials. It is ideal for measuring coating thicknesses on non-metallic substrates, such as plastic parts, wood or glass, as well as for determining the thickness of metallic base materials and coatings.

Thanks to its multi-layer measurement function, the Coating Thickness Gauge enables the precise analysis of complex material structures and multi-layer systems. The brilliant IPS color display ensures a razor-sharp display of all measured values, parameters and waveforms. The integrated waveform display allows precise control of the signal quality and thus contributes to the high measurement accuracy.

The sonic velocity can be individually adjusted to achieve optimum results for different materials. In addition, the Coating Thickness Gauge has 21 preset materials that are ready for immediate use. Thanks to the continuous measurement function, larger areas can also be checked quickly and efficiently.

Another advantage of the Coating Thickness Gauge is the internal memory for up to 999 data records, which can be used to easily document and later analyze measurement results. The stored data can be displayed directly on the device and, if required, conveniently read out, analyzed and exported in various formats using the PC software supplied.

The Coating Thickness Gauge is therefore ideal for numerous applications. It reliably measures the thickness of paint coatings and other coating systems on a wide variety of surfaces. Plastics and glass can also be analyzed precisely. The device is also ideal for measuring multi-layer materials where individual layers need to be precisely determined. Even pipe walls and metallic substrates can be tested with high accuracy, making the device particularly versatile.

Non-destructive determination of coating thickness on non-metallic substrates such as plastics, wood, concrete, or composite materials is often performed using ultrasonic measurement. The measuring device uses high-frequency sound pulses that are coupled into the coating to be tested via a probe. The pulse propagates through the polymer-coating and is partially reflected at the interfaces—for example, between individual coating layers or between the coating and the substrate. The probe detects these back wall echoes, and the ultrasonic coating thickness gauge calculates the corresponding coating or total thickness from the transit time of the ultrasonic pulse and the material-specific sound velocity.

For reliable measurement, the surface of the coating must simply be clean and free of loose dirt so that stable acoustic contact between the probe and the test point is ensured. In addition, coupling gel must be applied to ensure sound transmission. After the ultrasonic probe is placed vertically, the ultrasonic coating thickness gauge automatically generates a measurement pulse and analyzes the received echoes. Modern coating thickness gauges can either evaluate the strongest signal or—in the case of rough or irregular surfaces—specifically evaluate the deepest, clearly identifiable echo in order to suppress distorting reflections near the surface and precisely determine the actual coating thickness.

To increase the significance of the results, measurements are usually repeated at several positions and evaluated statistically. This procedure allows both uniform and varying layer thicknesses on non-metals to be reliably assessed without damaging the coating or the substrate..
