IP Housing Protection Classes
The majority of devices and test instruments have got an inscription IP with the two-digit number following the letters, and though the letters ever remain the same IP (Ingress Protection or Internal/International Protection), the numbers may be different, for example, IP20, IP54, IP65, IP67 and the others.

Any customer would like to have test instruments which have got a longer service life, provide reliable results and are robust to various impacts from outside. That is why the housing can be designed in such a way so that to protect the internal “feeling” of the device from the damage that can be caused by water, solid items of different nature, dust, shocks…

The number after IP … … indicates in fact what the device is protected from, since, both, the first and the second digit, have got a particular explanation. “0” always means that there is no protection, and depending on the position of the “0”, the user may detect, either it is not protected against the impact of solids or water. If instead one of the number there is letter X it means that the level of protection on this criterion has not been precisely determined.

The first digit (can be from 0 to 6 or letter X) always indicates the level of protection from the intrusion of solid items or objects coming from outside, including parts of the human body. The smaller the number, the bigger the size of the object may be. Protection agains waterFor example, test instruments with the IP 20 provide protection against the objects bigger than 12 mm, for example, finger. The digits 4, 5, 6 mean the reduction of the size of the object that may intrude, since they provide protection against the thin wire. If the application of the device involves operation in very dirty dusty environment, the device should have at least 5, better 6 as the first digit, since devices with the IP 5…/6… are dust protected / dustproof correspondingly.

The second digit (0 to 8 or letter X) indicates the level of protection from water penetration (water drops, water flow, water sprinkles, immersing into water). An angle at which the water drop or spray can affect the test instruments also matter, so, for example, IP … 2 gives the protection against the water drops at an angle not more than 15°, IP …3 – at an angle not more than 60° (for example, it can be rain), on condition that test instruments are under normal operating conditions. The highest digits 7 / 8 provide full protection even under the condition of immersing the test instruments under water. The devices retain all its functions and operating abilities.

IP 54 is considered to be the standard. It provides sufficient protection for the equipment, not meant to be applied under extreme conditions. It is protected from dust intrusion that can damage the device and is safe from water sprinkles, not depending on the direction or angle.

IP 67 is a higher protection class. 6 is the highest possible protection from the solid particles, thus, it means absolutely dustproof device. 7 indicates very high level of protection from water, even when the device is plunged into the water completely or partly not deeper than 1 m.

Addition of the third / sometimes fourth symbol is auxiliary, indicating additional functions. For example, IP 69K means the test instruments are not only fully dustproof, but also waterproof and remain safe under the influence of hot water under pressure.

In spite of water resistance, the difference should be made between sweet and salty water. Very often, test instruments with the sufficient IP protection (dust- and water resistant/proof) may fail under the influence of salty water, because of the properties salt has got and its corrosive influence. That is why test instruments meant for application not only under water, but for immersion in salty water, need to have a special mark made by the producer, confirming that the housing has been designed especially for this application. The same applies for very high / cold temperatures or application in the environment containing particles finer than dust.
